To What Extent Should Magazines Be Held Responsible For The Social Ramifications Of The Representations They Offer?

Many people believe teenage magazines are not made for their target audience and provide young teenagers with information that should not be in the magazine. Many adults believe magazines are very influential on teenagers as most teenagers enjoy reading a magazine and it is a fun way to provide information therefore magazines are a lot more influential.
Many people believe that when magazines contain information on how to look better then it is representing inappropriate life styles for teenagers. The cover on ‘Cosmo-girl’ has a cover line saying ‘5 ways to get a hotter body’. Many people would not be happy with the cover line as it could be influencing young teenagers to try and look a certain way i.e. super models. This means magazines are holding a bad representation of teenagers and could be claimed as responsible for things such as eating disorders or teenagers spending too much time and exercise to look a certain ‘preferred’ way. Magazines are making it look like guys like girls bodies a certain way and they could be teaching female teenagers their bodies are not good enough for guys as they are.
Some people also believe that teenage magazines should not be talking about ‘hot lads issue’ as it says in a cover line on the ‘Sugar’ front cover. Some people think parents would be appalled if they saw the contents teenagers were reading in their magazines that are supposedly meant to be aimed at teenagers. They believe there are too many magazines which constantly go on about hot guys and give girls free half naked photos of TV stars.
On the other hand many people can also argue that teenage magazines are good for teenagers as they inform them of many things that they are either too scared to ask or just cannot get the right information. Many people believe they provide safe and secure information to help teenagers understand more about life.
The government believe that magazines are the only good source of information for teenagers; they are responsible for providing a fun context of information so teenagers are inspired to remember the information and respect the information given to them by teenage magazines.
The magazine ‘Bliss’ shows on their cover lines how ‘curvy is cool’ this just proves that not all magazines are trying to make teenagers a certain way. They have proved that not all magazines are about showing teenagers to hot guys, sex and ‘sexy’ figures. Magazines are a new and influential source for teenagers to receive a lot of good advice anonymously without the need to for awkward conversations or being informed wrongly as magazines provide safe information, sometimes it is a teenagers only source of information.
People are forgetting to take into account the positive social ramifications magazines are having on teenagers and just thinking about the fewer negative representations of teenage magazines and do not sum up the good and bad points well enough. Therefore magazines can not be held responsible for the social ramifications and representations they offer. Although some may have a different view and believe that some teenage magazines should take some responsibility and be partially to blame.

  1. You have clearly thought about these magazines and their effects, positive and negative. You haven't fully considered the question of whether or not the magazine publishers have any responsibility for the effects on young females so your essay could be improved by developing this aspect.
